New facilities for children and young people from autumn 2017
During the restoration of Darlington Hippodrome, a dedicated space for creative learning and a home for our youth theatre and dance classes is being created within the building. This will allow us to expand the opportunities we currently provide for schools on-site.
What opportunities are available for schools until then?
Throughout the refurbishment we are keen to keep in touch with schools and support creative engagement in the classroom. Perhaps you have an idea for a project or need support from us to complete your Artsmark? We are also keen to hear from you about how we can best work with you in the future, and how you would like to receive information from us.
We are currently piloting a partnership schools scheme. We are working closely with each school to involve them in the restoration of the venue and to develop project work with them inspired by the history of the theatre. This involves tours of the venue including hard hat tours during the construction phase, and the development of discovery boxes containing objects and articles linked to the venue’s heritage which are taken into school to help children and young people connect to the theatre's unique story. The children involved will also have the chance to complete an Arts Award – a nationally recognised qualification.
