Darlington Hippodrome is developing and expanding its archive in a project funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund which is also supporting the restoration of the theatre. We are working with groups of trained volunteers to gather, record and digitise the theatre’s vast collection of production ephemera to create a searchable online database and a complete list of past productions.

Including a wide variety of material and supporting images, the database will enable the public to explore the building’s history and development and the Hippodrome’s past governance, and even to search for past cast and crews.

This project aims to increase public access to the existing collection, and to better understand the theatre’s four main heritage interests:

  • Backstage in an Edwardian theatre

  • The architecture and craftsmanship of the theatre

  • The development of pantomime

  • The role of Darlington Hippodrome in the development of the town and the impact of the railways on the theatre
